Follow in the footsteps of Native Americans as they sought after healthy waters; taste the difference between various springs and the minerals they contain; submerge yourself in the healing, warm waters of a natural spring. But whatever you do, make sure your stay in Manitou Springs includes a taste and feel of this sacred, healing water.
The mineral springs have always been an important part of what draws people to the area. Various Native American tribes found the natural springs to be so important, so sacred that they would agree to cease any fighting that was occurring so that everyone could peacefully enjoy these healing springs. A common Native American diet was high in meat and therefore slightly acidic. The mineral waters were a great way to re-balance their bodies. It didn’t talk long for European settlers to discover the healing properties as well, and the area has continued in popularity to this day.
In 1987 a group of citizens determined that these waters should be available to anyone who wanted them. So the Mineral Springs Foundation, along with the city of Manitou Springs and private citizens, restored eight mineral springs. Now, over the summer (May 25th-August 31st), you can take a guided tour of the area lead by a docent. These free 90 minute tours start at 10am on Wednesdays and Saturdays and include discussions about the history and mineral content of the water as well as the best part–tastings of course! The walk between 7-Minute spring, across from Memorial Park, and the Iron spring, located near the Cog Railway, is about 1.4 miles.
Can’t make it to the scheduled tour times? No problem. It is easy to take a self-guided tour of the area. Pick up a sipping cup and map at the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce (354 Manitou Ave. 80829, or online here) and make your way along historic downtown Manitou Springs. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather!
Want to take it a step further? Nearby SunWater Spa offers full body mineral water soaks in their cedar tubs. These tubs are kept between 100 and 104 degrees, making them the perfect temperature to relax and take in the healing properties of the water.
And the best part? Avenue Hotel is right in the heart of these natural springs.
