There are many ways to explore and enjoy the beauty of Colorado.  How about a train ride?
In  the Pikes Peak region you have the opportunity to experience 3 very different trains and 3 very different areas.  The Avenue Hotel Bed and Breakfast can be your home base as you head off on these different adventures. You have to travel no more than an hour to any one of the train rides described below.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway  is the highest cog train in the world and the highest railway in North America.  The Cog train runs year round and chugs to the 14,110 foot summit of  Pikes Peak, a 3 hour 10 minute round trip. A cog train uses a “gear” or a cog wheel that meshes into the track that allows it to climb steeper grades, up to a 48% grade. However the train does move slowly not more than 15 miles per hour.  So this experience on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway is one you may not get any other time. The views are spectacular and the conductors humorous and informative.

The Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge is operated by 15 ton steam engine.  A narrow gauge is a railway with a track gauge narrower than a standard gauge and are generally built for more general application and mountain use.  The Cripple Creek and Victor is a ride into history as you see old abandoned gold mines and experience the twists and turns of the narrow gauge in the mountains. The 45 minute ride south out of Cripple Creek takes you past several points of interest to the deserted mining camp of Anaconda, where the train turns and heads back to Cripple Creek. The train runs all summer, every 40 minutes, Memorial Day to Labor Day, adults ride for $12.95 children 3-12 $8.25.

South-west 45 minutes in Canon City is the Royal Gorge Route Railroad a spectacular train ride through the Royal Gorge. In March a new powerful turbo charged locomotive hit the rails.The 2 hour ride in the canyon along the Arkansas River is breathtaking. Experience great food and excellent service during this scenic ride. There are 6 different classes of service or travel options on the train and meal options as well. The Vista Dome offers an enclosed glass dome with great view and seating for lunch. Club Class for comfortable table seating. Coach Class with high back cushion seats and large windows.
